The Georg-August-Universität Göttingen has reached a milestone with the Deutschlandstipendium: the 2000th scholarship can be awarded in the 2023/2024 funding year. This was made possible by a pledge from SerNet GmbH, which has been supporting young talent for many years. The handover ceremony took place on December 11th in the auditorium at Wilhelmsplatz. In her speech, SerNet Managing Director Reinhild Jung emphasized the importance for the students as well as the cooperation between the university and the regional economy.
Since the introduction of the Deutschlandstipendium in 2011, SerNet has supported the initiative. The sponsorship is an essential part of the company's philosophy and demonstrates the connectedness of SerNet GmbH with the scientific institutions in the region, in particular the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Reinhild Jung emphasized the advantages for both sides: "We deal with computer science and need young talent, just like any good business." The Deutschlandstipendium is a way for SerNet to get in touch with young computer scientists at an early stage. "We have already met many interesting people in this way - for example Gerrit Krüger, who we took on board as a working student at SerNet after his scholarship period."
This year, SerNet decided to no longer tie the funds to STEM subjects, but instead to distribute them flexibly - to where they are particularly needed. The Central Scientific Institution for Teacher Education (ZEWIL) was awarded the contract. Reinhild Jung comments: "Now that our funds have been released, a prospective Latin teacher is receiving our scholarship and we are extremely pleased about that. Did you know that with a Latin teaching degree, you can practically choose your school, because female Latin teachers are even rarer than female computer scientists?"
This year's SerNet scholarship holder can now not only look forward to formally being the 2000th recipient at Georg-August University. SerNet has also decided to increase the funding share of 1800 euros a little and thus also reach the 2000.
Background: The Deutschlandstipendium supports students for one year with 300 euros per month. Half of the total amount is raised by the university from sponsors, the other half comes from federal funds. University President Prof. Dr. Metin Tolan: "The Deutschlandstipendium enables our students to concentrate more on their studies and to reach their full potential. This milestone of 2000 scholarships underlines the enormous support we receive from our alumni and regional companies."
